VA Sales Tax Holiday for School Supplies & Clothing

Starting today, Friday August 6th through Sunday August 8th is the State of Virginia’s Tax Holiday for School Supplies & Clothing. The first full weekend of August each year (since 2005) is designated as a tax holiday for certain back-to-school shopping. Check out this list of qualifying items that you can buy tax-free (as long as each item is $20 or less).

“School supply,” means an item that is commonly used by a student in a course of study. For purposes of the sales tax holiday, the term includes, “school art supply,” “school instructional material,” and “school music supply.” The term does not include computers or “school computer supplies”, and such items may not be purchased exempt of the tax.

Free Samples At Local Malls This Weekend (Feb. 19-21, 2010)

• Free Fiber One Yogurt Samples at Pentagon City Mall. Yum! Livia e-mailed me to let me know that there will be FREE Fiber One Yogurt samples near the Food Court during regular mall hours from Fri. 2/19 through Sun. 2/21/10.  The sampling promotion is a part of a promotional tour for Fiber One that has already visited malls in California, Colorado, Minnesota, Illinois and Connecticut, and is ending with this event in Arlington, VA. I have not found a press release or website link confirming this promo (I’m relying solely on Livia’s email), but if you’re in the area and already shopping at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City this weekend, try checking near the food court for the free samples. Thanks Livia!

Bed Bath And Beyond 20% Off Coupon Use in Northern VA

It seems like almost every bride and groom I’ve known in the past 5 years has had a bridal registry at Bed Bath and Beyond (I did too almost 5 years ago!). I don’t know about you, but living in an apartment for the first few years of our marriage, I got a TON of those mailer coupons for 20% off any one item at Bed Bath & Beyond. I’ve noticed that they haven’t been mailing as many of these out lately, but can usually find a coupon on the back of one of their magazine mailers.

Here are some things which you may or may not know, but which I have found helpful in buying registry items and gifts at BB&B in Northern Virginia over the past few years:

• Hold on to those 20% off one item, and $5 Off $15 Purchase coupons because the store accepts these coupons after their expiration date!*
• Bed Bath & Beyond accepts competitor coupons such as from Linens ‘N’ Things (which no longer has store locations)
• You can use multiple coupons in one transaction (ie. you are buying 3 items, you can use three 20% off coupons in one purchase). This has held true at a variety of BB&B stores in the Northern VA area that I have personally shopped at in the past. Ask your cashier or customer service rep. at your local store to confirm that this is their policy too.
• You can bring in a coupon and have it applied to a recent receipt/purchase when you didn’t have the coupon with you to redeem at check out. Just figured this one out this week! I asked what the formal policy was regarding this (ie. up to 1 week, 1 month, etc.?) but was just told to bring it in at my convenience. My suggestion would be to do this within a few days of purchase or as soon as possible.
• The 20% off coupons and other BB&B coupons can be used on clearance/reduced items (at least in my experience). Be sure to ask your cashier at check out to confirm if your local store has this policy too.
• If you are buying something off of a bridal registry and want to have BB&B ship the gift to the bride & groom, you cannot use this coupon for an online purchase, however you can go into the store at the bridal registry desk and ask a customer service rep. to log in to their computer and place the order through their intranet system and then they will allow you to use your coupon. I have found that for a $35-$50 gift, this coupon usually helps cover the cost of shipping.

*I will note, that back at the beginning of 2009 there was some chatter on the blogs about a change in BB&B coupon policy in regards to accepting expired coupons, and from what I’ve read there are some BB&B stores around the US that no longer accept expired coupons and that have signs at the register regarding this new policy. However, it seems that this varies by where you live, and from my experience in Northern VA, the BB&B stores here all still accepting expired coupons.
